Senior Fellow- Arctic
Senior Fellow Alex Dalziel specializes in Arctic geopolitics and security. After over two decades working in the Canadian intelligence and national security community, Alex has been honing his knowledge in the civil society sector since 2023. He has published extensively on Russian, Nordic, US, Chinese and Canadian strategy in the region, as well as on hybrid threats and disinformation. His commentary has appeared on CTV Your Morning, CBC Radio and Finnish broadcaster Yle, as well as in leading print media such as the Globe and Mail, the National Post, iPolitics, Nikkei Asia, Fox News, BBC World Service and Policy Options. He is a sought-after public speaker, having made presentations, delivered keynotes and participated in panels across Canada, Finland, Estonia, Denmark and the United States.
In addition to undergraduate and graduate degrees in history from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, Alex brings knowledge of Russian, Finnish and French, as well as certificates in European Studies from the University of Bonn, Germany, and in Baltic area studies from the University of Eastern Finland. He has lived, worked and studied in Washington, DC, USA, and Odesa, Ukraine.
During his government career, Alex held analytical and advisor positions at the Privy Council Office (PCO), Department of National Defence (DND), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Canada School of Public Service (CSPS), while also serving as an executive at PCO and CSPS. He gained experience in regional law enforcement in western Canada and at the Canadian embassy in Latvia. Among the clients he served were the Prime Minister’s Office, multiple Clerks of the Privy Council and Canadian national security advisors, senior leaders throughout the 5-eyes and NATO, and working-level border security and law-enforcement officers.
